If you do, then you should think about taking Skilled Trades 10.
Skilled Trades 10 provides full academic credit for taking part in activities you enjoy. If you register for apprenticeship, you will be eligible to receive 110 hours for each Skilled Trades course. Skilled Trades 10 may just be the first step on a great journey through the trades!
Students who successfully complete Skilled Trades courses (under the direction of a certified journeyperson) teacher can earn up to 500 hours upon registration as an apprentice or youth apprentice.
In Skilled Trades courses, you learn about the tremendous impact the skilled trades have on society, find out what life in the skilled trades is really like, and experience how rewarding it is to work with both your mind and your hands.
Skilled Trades 10 is a general course which focuses on the construction-related trades, and touches on other trades in a broad view. Skilled Trades 10 is a prerequisite for all other Skilled Trades courses.
Classes in Skilled Trades 10 introduce you to the on-the-job realities faced by apprentices when they begin training. You use professional-grade hand tools, and, like an apprentice, spend much of your time working on practical activities and real construction projects. This experience quickly gives you a strong sense of the physical demands of skilled trades work. During the course, you and a partner build a section of a wall, complete with plumbing and electrical wiring.
As you complete course projects, you learn how to perform the following tasks:
- work as part of a team
- read blue prints
- make precise measurements and calculations
- estimate materials requirements
- handle materials
- communicate effectively
In a typical class, you explore career opportunities and also work toward mastering the professional techniques needed to build, wire, and install plumbing for your wall.
